Master of None: Still a Jack

05.25.22

Along side wearing a cute baby blue fit at 6:00 A.M so I would be Ms. Malak, I pack a black leather corset belt and heavy matte red lipstick so I can look at least 5 years older at a business meeting at 2:00 P.M.

Am I a teacher? Start up owner? Business student? Marketer? Chef? Writer? MUN kid who screams about politics?

"Jack of all trades"

That's what some may call that. It's a nice title. Recognizing the meaning of word kind of made me feel like I have a classification, and gave me some sense of belonging. It didn't change the deeply engraved confusion.

Being 20 is all about people finding themselves. Some friends decided it was by time they settle down. They found the love of their life and decided to dedicate their life to their families and homes. Others, have or are on the verge of graduating and have found full time jobs, 9-5 with deadlines and a fixed salary at the beginning of each and every month. Others, have applied for scholarships and masters abroad and decided that once they graduate they're out.

"Pioneers in a certain field have nothing else to do" - A decent comforting attempt

Honestly watching all of this unfold was like standing in a train station. Everyone picked up their luggage, boarded their train to a destination they have always wanted to go to, but one person watched everyone leave and just stood there. Me. I stand there with my heavy diverse luggage scattered. Multiple ripped apart train tickets scattered around, and a lot, A LOT, of missed trains, with no regrets, I guess.

That, my friend, is the very dark side of being a Jack of all trades.

"You know what's the good part about being a Jack; it is that wherever you end up, ya Malak, you're gonna have fun. As Jacks we no longer look for what's fun, everything to us is fun, we look for what adds to us value."

I think coming to terms with the so many different sides of my personality is something that took sometime. Being confident in what I do (every single one of them) is what jacks do. I will have fun wherever I go. I will bring so much to the table wherever I am.

I let every part sink into the other, and love it. Start up owner Malak, taught teacher Malak how to handle parents better. Chef Malak helped teacher Malak bring cool acitivies to the kids that they look forward to. MUN Malak could convince anyone with anything with proof and statistics, and that secured startup owner Malak so many deals. Life is not meant to be in one path, for some. Some, are distinct to belong in multiple places and leave a piece of their heart at each. We will always jump from a train to the next, and when we meet an old friend at one of those trains we will be happy for them, we might feel a tad bit left out, but in a minute we will be on to the next.

So, Ladies, and gents let me sum this up and give you 5 tips of how I overcame what I like to call "Jack Anxiety"

1- It is alright to be confused or feel left out at times, this should NOT influence your decisions.

2- Realize that maybe you're not a 10 with each skill you have BUT that doesn't change the fact that your large skills pool is something special that could be put to good use in each and every experience you go through. Don't disconnect from one personality in favor of the other.

3- Wherever you are, you will have fun. Just find what adds value to you and do that.
Freddy can tell you more on that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyWwHARLvro&t=465s

4- Always self evaluate. Understand where you stand at each thing you do. What you should put on pause because currently it adds nothing to your value, and what you need to develop. Study each one of your learning curves.

5-  Lastly, be confident. Understand that if someone discusses a topic with one approach, you have multiple, you will always have something different to add, maybe you won't be the expert, but you will be able to bring something different to the table, and you will also ALWAYS have something to learn from that table.

" Doesn't make sense for me to say I wanna be a successful person when I grow up, but it makes much more sense that I say I wanna be beneficial to myself and others, that I just wanna be happy, in general. Life is all about learning. That job "call" will come whenever." - A friend of mine.
